Pay attention to your process and journey (And not the results)

Royston Phang is a Singapore educator, builder, and product designer. He is passionate about upcycling used materials into visually pleasing lifestyle products for everyday use. He founded SALTTWORKSHOP JUNIOR, where he leads engaging woodworking workshops for children, encouraging them to turn their ideas and imaginations into creations.

In this video, viewers see Royston in action during his workshops and hear his inspiring stories about his mission and creative process.

One thing Royston taught me, which I still practice today, is to pay attention to the process and journey I take to reach my goals before worrying about the results.

I used to be laser-focused on being the best in whichever industry I wanted to thrive in. Eventually, this habit transformed me into a person filled with anger, jealousy, and selfishness. I was so focused on being the best that I neglected to stop and smell the roses—to enjoy the journey.

Here’s the thing. If we are too focused on achieving the desired results, we might overlook the little messages or life lessons. I failed to appreciate how my friends were sticking their necks out for me, how much success I’ve achieved, coming up with solutions to overcome my challenges and life-changing lessons.

I will spend most of my days ranting about how difficult it is to achieve or reach my goals and failing to see how far I have come since the beginning.

Everyone takes different paths in life, and these paths are set up specifically for us, no one else. Additionally, every choice we make along the way will affect our path. This is where things get interesting. Paying attention to your journey might also reveal that your ideal goals are not what you wanted.

Let me share a personal experience with you.
I’ve always wanted to be a famous guitarist who tours the world with celebrity singers, but I found joy in teaching the instrument instead. Before reaching stardom, I had to make a living teaching students how to strum their first chord. After doing it for a few years, I fell in love with teaching and pursued it instead.

See how things shifted?

If I had not paid attention to my job as a teacher, I would still be collecting paychecks and funding my road to stardom. But I’m glad that I did, and it became the best thing ever.

Enjoy your journey and your process.
Worry about the results later.
