I Think Businesses Overthink Their Brand Story Video

One of my main services is helping brands plan and produce a master video that focuses on telling their brand story.
But somehow, my clients tend to overthink it.
They feel like these videos are complicated.
“What if I don't have a story?”
“What am I supposed to talk about?”
“What do we even film?”
“What if my product or service is boring?”
Let me explain.
Think of a brand story video as an “About Us” video.
It can live on your homepage, be pinned to the top of your Instagram, or simply be shared whenever someone wants to learn more about your business.
It's that master video that explains:
Who you are.
What your brand does.
Why you started.
How you help your customers.
And what makes your business different.
Think of it as a one-size-fits-all video that gives people a good understanding of your business without needing you to explain everything again and again.
So, what actually goes into a brand story video?
There are a few different parts, depending on your brand and how much you're willing to show or talk about.
And that's the beauty of it.
It's highly customisable.
Every brand story video is different.
1. Your Story
This is the part where we talk about why you started.
Maybe you experienced a problem yourself.
Maybe you noticed something missing in the market.
Maybe you went through certain challenges and eventually discovered a solution.
And that solution became your business.
Why is this important?
Because customers are humans, and the people selling to them are humans too.
People can connect with another person's experiences, struggles and stories much more easily than they can connect with a list of numbers and statistics.
Your story gives people something to relate to.
And when they relate to you, there's a greater chance they'll remember you.
You might even attract people who share similar values, experiences or beliefs.
That's how you start building a community and, hopefully, long-term relationships.
2. Show Me What You Do
The next part of a brand story video is what I like to think of as supporting visuals.
These are the things that help show or reinforce what you've just talked about.
For example:
Behind the scenes.
Product demonstrations.
Your service in action.
What it looks or feels like to use your product.
Your working environment.
Customer experiences.
Testimonials.
These visuals give your audience a better understanding of what you actually do.
You've told them your story.
Now you're showing them.
And sometimes, these are the things that help customers feel confident enough to make a decision.
But here's the important part...
You don't need to include everything.
Because brand story videos are specifically tailored to each business, we can move things around, remove certain sections, or focus more heavily on the parts that matter to you.
Maybe you don't want to talk about your personal journey.
That's okay.
Maybe testimonials aren't relevant to your business.
That's okay too.
Maybe your product needs more time on screen than your founder story.
We can do that.
It's your story.
You decide what you want people to see and what you're comfortable sharing.
And that's why I don't think brand story videos need to be complicated.
It's really a step-by-step process.
First, we figure out what you want to say.
Then we decide what we want to show.
Then we plan what we need to film.
That's it.
You don't need to have an extraordinary story.
You don't need a dramatic founder journey.
You don't need to reveal your entire personal life.
You simply need to share what feels real and comfortable to you.
Then we build the video around that.
Because at the end of the day, this isn't just another marketing video.
It's your brand story.
It belongs to you.
